Bloodless Alternative A Thinking Girls Best Friend

Diamonds are a girl's best friend unless, of course, they have been mined to fund a war.

The release of the blockbuster film "Blood Diamond" has shown a less glamorous side to the sparkling allure of diamonds. Now shoppers who want the lustre - without worrying that a jewel may have been used to fund conflict and civil war - are looking for alternative products, Moi Moi Fine Jewellery says.

The jewellers were unaware of "blood diamonds" before the movie, but are noticing increasing interest in their product Moissanite, a jewel with the same brilliance and lifetime guarantee of a diamond.

"We had people coming in [who] like the look of diamonds but they don't want to buy conflict jewellery so they have sought an alternative," Moi Moi Fine Jewellery director Alana Chang said." About 50 per cent have mentioned the movie as the reason for coming - a lot hadn't heard about conflict jewellery and it freaked them out. People are deciding to spend a tenth of the price of diamond and use that money for their honeymoons.
